About Me

Hello and welcome to my photo blog. I am Karen McKinnon, a Vancouver Island based photographer - a gal fortunate to be living my passion. The blog is where you can see recent sessions, keep in touch with what is new around here (and I promise you it is never dull) and get a better sense of who I am, what I love and how I show it.

Thanks for visiting. Please leave a comment and let me know you were here - it really does make me smile!

This time of year is always a busy one and exciting one. I am out photographing whenever the weather hits the right mark and I am busy booking next years weddings and the final portrait dates for the year.

So, getting to blogging, although it is such a love of mine, has been a little harder than usual. I feel like I have to catch the weather and light while it was here.

Many of you will recognize Misty - and know of her warmth and stunning smile. Here she is with her beautiful family. Her kids charmed the beezesus out of me -

We always love our annual Boo Sessions. It is one of the handful of events we offer to say thank you to existing and past clients - a little perk!
This is the fourth year of the event and it is something both Christine and I look forward too. Thank you to everyone who made it out and for bringing donations to the food-bank, and thank you to all you parents who put so much into playing with your kids and one last thank you .. thank you for the kindness and treats you showered on Christine and I.

Here are a few sneak peeks, you can see some others on my FACEBOOK PAGE

To those of you that participated keep an eye on your in-box on Tuesday.

In our family we donate tons of our used items. However this year, we will be taking some our holiday budget and using it to buy some new toys for children that otherwise would not receive any!  I will be taking the kids down so they can each pick a toy to give, and reinforcing the importance of generosity and noticing how easy it is to make a difference to someone!

In order to encourage other to jump in we have set up draw boxes at each of the three Planet Kids locations (Comox Ave, Driftwood Mall and 5th Street) and at the end of November will be drawing one name to receive the royal photo treatment!!!

I am super excited about this!

These two have the energy of a couple newly in love - they listen when the other speaks, they watch each other, they touch, they share knowing smiles and the beam when they snuggle. However, their history is rich and varied, including travel, homemaking, moving and learning.
Their little one is coming into a family so grounded and excited - it is such a blessed child.
Caila, you are stunning, your smile makes me smile, you wear pregnancy very well! That you both for coming out and playing with me.

Rebecca, Jesse and I had been going back and forth about what date to book for their engagement session. They were coming from out of town, and somehow our schedules seemed to be completely opposite - plus we were hitting some bad weather. When we talked about postponing this session, as the weather was not on our side, and they were driving here from out of town, Rebecca said "we just really need to do this now." These two run busy lives, between children, jobs and planning a wedding they needed some "them time" and trust me, I get that.
What Rebecca go was that the engagement session was a time for them to take a deep breath together, be close, think about them as couple, and the step they will be making when they say "I do" next year.
It's true. Engagement sessions are many things. A wonderful opportunity for us to get to know each other better, a chance to practice being in front of the camera, a time to have photos together not in your wedding wear and a way to create some unique photos to make a signature book for your wedding. My favorite thing about them though, is they are romantic and they are couple time, something often oddly lacking leading up to having a wedding. Rebecca and Jesse got that and because of that, the sun, not intending to arrive, came out and joined us.

Thank you Rebecca and Jesse, for the lovely day of playing together. Thank you for the great laughs and letting me see who you are as a couple.
