About Me

Hello and welcome to my photo blog. I am Karen McKinnon, a Vancouver Island based photographer - a gal fortunate to be living my passion. The blog is where you can see recent sessions, keep in touch with what is new around here (and I promise you it is never dull) and get a better sense of who I am, what I love and how I show it.

Thanks for visiting. Please leave a comment and let me know you were here - it really does make me smile!

If you follow me on facebook you know it has been a funny week. It is amazing how putting in a new computer system can mess with things. At one point yesterday I looked over at Christine and her head was laying on her desk. Of course, we are managing to add much laughter to our week - so the frustration is balanced out by a good dose of inappropriate office humour.

As well, on a personal note, I am struggling with a little something. (warning.... over share ahead.)
For two years I have struggled with what they think is Psioriosis. It is a skin condition that basically looks ucky and feels about the same. It is on the edges of my face. Most of the time it looks like dry skin, and some of the time it isn't apparent at all. I typically can manage it with diet, no wheat, easy on the sugar. However, recently it has gone rogue, and my efforts seem futile. Yes, I have seen the skin doctor, I work with a naturopath, I have tired every skin cream I can get my hands on - heavens, I have even made my own.  When my skin is bad I notice that I don't feel as good - a bit flu like, ughhh.
This week it hit a new level of frustration for me. You see, I am hearty Eastern European stock, I rarely get sick, have never been allergic to anything, I sleep well, I exercise, I eat healthy - so really.. what is this all about!! Enough I say! (how's that for drama)
So today I am off to see the doctor again for another referral. In order to ensure my skin was bad - I ate everything I shouldn't yesterday, and guess what? My skin looks better.
Good times! Perhaps there are more croissants in my future.

So this morning I approached my day with a zen like attitude. I keep listening to One Voice by the Wailing Jenny's and I edited this beautiful session.  Now, I feel re-set.

Honestly, one of the great gifts of my work is that when I am feeling funky, I just come back to the images - taking them, looking them - and connecting with my amazing clients. I am thankful to have this in my life.

Meet 12 day old Meirah,  her parents Michelle and Greg (see their maternity session here) have been valued clients of mine for many years. Their daughter Meirah arrived into a family and community that was so excited to meet her. Her name means "light" which is so appropriate given who her parents are and the joy she brings.

She is simply beautiful. I will admit, I cried a bit during this session. Congratulations Michelle and Greg, she is the luckiest of girls to have you.

I don't think they come any nicer than the Stevenson family. When we were planning their session mom Jennifer, kept saying I just want a nice photo of my family. Easily done.
With their picturesque property and warm demeanour with me and each other, it was easy to get in the mode to photograph their family.
When I pulled up, Jacob was there to welcome me and show me his cars and we were off to a rolling start, with him, his parents and his adorable sister.
With an little flower picking mid -session you just can't go wrong.

I truly wish all women could look at themselves and let the things they love about themselves roll of their tongue. I wish they could see their reflection in the mirror and say, hell ya! "This gal has something going on". I wish they could look forward to their own photoshoot thinking "wow, it is going to be amazing to document my favorite bits about myself." Well.. it doesn`t quite happen that way. But things are heading in the right direction. Over the last few years I have had an increasing amount of woman call to book a session - just because. This, makes me very happy.
They are celebrating themselves.
Typically, they are nervous. Fair enough. But I tell you, there is no reason to be shy - I guarantee that after 10 minutes we will be laughing, sharing and the parts of you that you adore will be shining and maybe, just maybe, you will move that one step further away from your inner critique.

When Deborah booked, she told me that she was prepared for it to be worse than being at the dentist, this doesn`t look like a woman who has been sitting under a drill.

After her session Deborah sent me a message about what a great time she had and how special it was  - made my day - okay my week. Thank you Deborah for jumping in and trusting me, I had such a lovely time sharing with you and capturing you - you are a beautiful, brave and inspiring. This photo has so much of you in it.

Happy Wednesday everyone, I have a spring in my step this morning as I am off to teach a private photo session, which is going to make for a fabulous morning.

This family is one of my favorite to photograph. There I said it. I have favorites. I first started photographing them with the birth of their eldest daughter Meave and it was a click. Me and Meave got each other, and her photos have since be used on my website and magazine covers. Then little sister Frida came along, and it was double the sweetness. These two have so much personality, both in very different ways and are so easy to play with.
What secured their place in my top ten though is their mom, who I knew I had to scoop up as a friend. She is fun, laid-back, honest and brilliant - I had to have her in my corner.

Their sessions are always a blast, this one involved a pair of swimming goggles, adorable dresses, a captain's hat, and lots and lots of dancing to Shakira.

It was hard to pick what to blog, but these two jumped out at me. I love the spontaneity of the image on the right, and as for the one on the left - lately I am drawn to clean, nicely lit, crisp images that show the honest beauty of a child.
