About Me

Hello and welcome to my photo blog. I am Karen McKinnon, a Vancouver Island based photographer - a gal fortunate to be living my passion. The blog is where you can see recent sessions, keep in touch with what is new around here (and I promise you it is never dull) and get a better sense of who I am, what I love and how I show it.

Thanks for visiting. Please leave a comment and let me know you were here - it really does make me smile!

If you follow the blog you know I have been gushing about the beautiful families I have been photographing recently. Wai-Ling, Rupert and their children fit right in. I adore this family and their approach to their session. The intention has always been to photograph them on their property and when it turned out that they would be starting the building process, (their home is now a big hole in the ground, literally,) they decided to still charge ahead with the session.
I am so glad they did, after we photographed on their beach I captured some casual images of the family in front of what is and will be for the while their temporary home.
While they build they are living in their little one bedroom beach house. All together. I found myself a little envious of the summer they have ahead, what a fabulous bond building experience, I am sure it is a summer the children will always fondly remember.

Thank you for  having me, your family is an inspiring one, that really knows what matters!

I truly love a couple who are willing to start their day with a photoshoot, and luckily it seems to be a bit of a trend for me....(yay!)
Debbie and Brian met me early in the morning down at the marina for their photo-session, they arrived coffee in hand (thank you) and enthusiastic about their session.
Although they are parents, these two chose to have a session just celebrating them! What a beautiful thing.
Debbie and Brain, I have many, many faves, however I loved the simple symmetry in this one.
Thank you for being so fabulous and authentic.

Debbie & Brian:

Great picture Karen, it is hard to look at it without thinking of "pulling pants down" or feeling toes go numb though. LOL Thank you for a great morning - you made us feel completely at ease!
We look forward to seeing the rest and will be in very soon.

Sweet Cash. First I will gush about him. This little fella came earlier than expected, but he is a trouper and despite a little stressful start, is growing and developing like a champ. He was a little sweet-pea during our session, barely made a peep and kept me me - oohing and ahhing throughout the session. He is adorable, including his little mohawk.

Now to gush about mom and dad.  Courtenay and Bob are champs. I have known Courtenay for years and was crushed when I wasn't available to photograph her wedding, then of course we had a maternity session in the works, but with Cash's early arrival we missed out on that one, but it was all worth the wait, as I couldn't imagine and sweeter first session together.
Many of you know Courtenay as the owner of Bling Fashions. It is due to her, and only her, that I don't wear a black V-Neck sweater more than I should. But in all honesty, now that the store is closed, it is dropping in and visiting with Courtenay that I, and I know many others, will miss the most. Bob, is the snuffalupagus of the relationship, we had never met and I was curious what type of fella had stolen Courtenay's heart. Well it is easy to see why she is crazy for him. The love he has in his eyes for his gal and babe shines so very brightly, as does Bob's fabulous personality - we all had a great time at this session - thank you Courtenay and Bob and welcome Cash, I am looking forward to watching you grow!

Come visit us tomorrow! Christine and I will be at the Babie's Bellies and Birth Fair held at the Native Sons Hall from 10 to 4 tomorrow.
We are thrilled to once again be a sponsor of this top-notch super friendly event. Last year was the first year and people were raving about it.

I will also be speaking at 1:45 about preserving your photos. We will talk about backing up,workflow, printing and anything else that comes up. If time allows I also promised to give some photography tips.

You can see all the information on the event Facebook page

And in other news...

After years of considering a One Year Baby Plan, and changing my mind, then getting re-excited about it, then not having it feel just right ... we have finally hit the mark and created something that feels just right for us, and provides amazing value for our clients.
So tomorrow we will be launching our McKinnon Photography Baby Plan, I are really proud of it and looking forward to sharing it tomorrow.

I am coming out of the closet,  Frank + Chantel (Frantel) are my couple crush. I first met Chantel when she was dating and we did an instant and open dish about the joy (sigh) of dating. John and I hadn't met long before, so the memory of my bad dates with men in cover bands was still fresh. Since then, among other things, we have crossed paths through our dear friend Jenn Zahavich. When we lost Jenn earlier this year, even though we didn't actually spend more time together, it tightened Chantel's and mine connection. Jenn talked often to me about Chantel, her humour, her passion for gardening, textile arts, her work as a teacher and truly how much she loved her.
Frank - have you met him? I am tempted to make him blush. I have known Frank from around our kids dance school, and his presence is just one of those happy ones - plus,  When he commissioned me to photograph him and his daughters last year - I was thrilled - they are such a fun, loving family. I came back from the session and told Christine, wow, he really has it all together, he probably even volunteers for Search and Rescue or something...... well, guess what? He does.
So I was pretty giddy for my Frantel TENder Session, and it didn't disappoint, together they are tender but exciting, they are playful and loving. Their journey together is fresh and oh the adventures they have planned.....

Audrey:

Great photos of you of the two of you Chantel. What a small world it is. Karen you did my friends wedding, Danette and Mike. Myself (Audrey) and my husband Jack were in their wedding party. I have had the pleasure of knowing the lovely and charming Chantel since we worked together in a photo lab in Nanaimo, I don't know how many years ago?
