Julie, Rod, Ellen and Jordyn met me at the beach despite some aggresive, looming rain clouds. Unless there is a wind storm or full-on rain we always try to go ahead with our outdoor sessions, and pretty much, if there is some interesting weather, it adds to the beauty of the session.

It was a dark night, and we had beautiful soft light, add wonderful relaxed family and this is what you get.

I have to say I have so many I love from this family session, so Julie and Rod, just to warn you, it might be hard to pick your favorite - this was one of mine!

There is a lot of action on our facebook page, so if you aren't following us, you can check it out HERE   right now there is fierce thread about legwarmers and parachute pants - where do you sit on this topic?

This is the first day this summer I have worked 9 to 5, and I am pumped - nerdy right? I have been putting in the hours this summer, but mostly on the weekends and evenings.

Today I am heading out the door, lunchbox in hand, with a spring in my step.

But first..  the Bolton's!

The Bolton's booked their session to coincide with their oldest heading off to university. We do many sessions marking this time in the life of a family and it is an ideal time to have images created.

The Bolton's are totally hooked up. Mom and Dad are stunning, laid back and lovely people. I am pretty sure their kids never fight with them, always do what they say , and prefer to be with their ultra-hip and wise parents their friends. Right?

Thank you Bolton's for coming out in what was questionable weather and for reminding me of why I love my job.

I sat down at 9 a.m., ready to roll. Eeekkk..
The internet was down. I realized two things. One I am an internet adict. THe whole thought of my office being off-line threw my work game face off. Two, that once again, as per my previous post, I had to roll with it..

So my day did not include the mass amount of blogging that I had hoped for, but before the dinner bell sounds (who am I kidding? No magic dinner bell that signals a healthy meal being placed on the table is going to happen, but a girl can dream,) I had to share some of the fabulous Churchill family.

The little man Westin has been in front of the camera with me before, and once again he brought the cute, as his big sister. Well, actually, they are all really darn cute! Love this family - thank you for choosing me as your family photographer.

Christine had been talking with me for sometime about having a session and it was worth the wait as we got to shoot on her birthday and if you know anything about me you know I love birthdays.
I have had the chance to chat with Christine many times before, but as if often the case, the man, is a mystery to me. I was so pleased to meet Andy and see his smile and laugh could match pace with Christine.  They are such a lovely couple. As part of their session we popped by to visit someone special, their new puppy, Laboo, which they get to take home in a few weeks.

Thank you Christine, Andy and Laboo for making me part of your birthday day, I hope it was just the kick start it needed!

Scroll to the bottom of this post if just hearing the word puppy makes you melt.

Warmth. That's what most of my sessions this summer have had. Not heat, well, yes, there has been that. But warmth, in that the sessions seem to start with big hugs. The Lucas family was no exception. Set against a backdrop of a setting sun, the Lucas's and I had a fantastic time, laughing, sharing tv guilty pleasures and ideal holiday locations.

Despite looking totally goofy as I photographed and held my reflector in the blowing wind and managed to drop a lens cap in the ocean, they were incredibly nice to me.

Thanks amazing, funny, beautiful Lucas Family. I hope you love your images.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of photographing Chris and her family, and last week I headed out with Chris to create some professional images for the graphic design business she will be launching  - Take Flight Designs.

Chris is one of those people I know for here and there - that's how it often is around town. When I first met her I liked her style - modern, a bit retro and full of life. Now that I know her better, I have also fallen for her humour, honesty and uniqueness.

We started off our session with a java at one of my favourite coffee shops, The Wandering Moose , and then  puttering around town, shooting, chatting, shooting, chatting..

Chris, you are beautiful and bring such a fresh aesthetic to your work!

You can check out Chris on her blog here - and if you scroll down to the yellow sweater post, you will know what to get me for my birthday.

There are some obvious guidelines to being a Patterson.

It seems you must be:

extremely approachable
quick witted, with a bit of fast thinking sarcasm as the icing on top
naturally stylish
good at communicating
ridiculously talented
and really darn nice

I personally, was just thrilled to be able to photograph them.
a few fave's:

pattersontrio.jpg

and this one, because Claire was just telling me how much she adores her husband, and well, look at the way she is looking at him:

patterson070tw.jpg

And this one, because the Patterson's, lead by Dean, have their own special pose, the single armed, arms crossed pose.

I always get a little anxious about photographing friends, you would think I would be more relaxed, but nope - I get a little knot in my tummy. I figure they know my work well, and I really want to bring them my best each time.
Bevin had a family photograph schedule awhile back, but had to re-schedule. For a darn fine reason though. Her family was about to grow.

This was the way the session was suppose to be.

clempsonB054tw.jpg

Bevin, although I know you aren't feeling like it right now, you are glowing.  We are all so excited to welcome your little one into our community and to celebrate with you Reza, and Aryo.

June 15, 2010 // bella

Here are more images from the epic Bella Party.

Mel, our leader, without her we wouldn't ever see each other so I had to blog two photos of her.
Thanks Mel, for making us happen.

Mel's eyes are full of  stories and sincerity, it is like she has lived way longer than her years - she is timeless. I am confident Mel could live anywhere, in any era and she would make it her home, she would fit right in, find her tribe andshe would live her life fully and make a difference. Mel, this photo has so much in it that I adore about you.

One more to share - D is just an absolute beauty. Her sister has been a client and friend so I had heard all about D for years. It was lovely that she was able to come into the studio while she was visiting from out of town.
I hope it added to your feeling of holiday!

In my make believe life I blogged each morning this week. In my real life I dealt with crazy computer issues this week and it seems like my brain is connected to the computer, when it is out of sorts, so am I.  The root of the problem has been solved and we are on the up and up. So let the re-assembling of my brain and the chronic blogging begin.

I had to start out with R because she is fighting some serious bad-ass cold/flu ugliness and we all know how gorgeous we feel when we are having spastic coughing fits. Hopefully this will be a pick-me up, and she will see how absolutely stunning she is.
I also happen to have the inside scoop on R and her beauty on the outside is just as radiant as on the inside.

December 24, 2009 // my life
The kids are laughing and playing, John is cleaning and I am photoshopping (only because I think I shot one of my favorite maternity sessions EVER!) - my perfect holiday has begun.

I am actually just about to tie things up here and head upstairs for some special coffee and board games. Followed by more special coffee, board games and eating.

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday, I know we are looking forward to quiet family time and extra moments reflecting on all the goodness we are blessed with.

For those of you with new McKinnon Photography prints on your wall and those receiving them for Christmas thank you for letting us be part of your holiday gift giving.

Peace

Usually when I work I am in a bubble that keeps me so much in the moment and focused on the relationships and beauty of the people I am photographing.
Last week, as I went though the gates to a gorgeous home to photograph three very special families, the Janzen's, Beausoleil's and Mangles'.  I was very cozy and content in my bubble.
These three families bit for my services at the YANA auction, and we put together a marathon portrait session. These families have been best friends for years, their children are best friends, they are like family to each other - and it was a beautiful thing to be around them on thanksgiving day. It made me want to call all my pals and tell them how much I love them.

My assistant Jen and I felt very thankful for these clients. Not only did they donate generously to YANA, a charity very close to my heart, but they were happy, themselves, laid back and somehow managed to keep the impending rain away.

I know a few of them from around town (okay, well if truth be told, from my love of shopping at Cherry Wine, and Uranus) and a few I have had the sincere pleasure of photographing before - meeting the rest of their crew was great fun.
