It was a dark night, and we had beautiful soft light, add wonderful relaxed family and this is what you get.
I have to say I have so many I love from this family session, so Julie and Rod, just to warn you, it might be hard to pick your favorite - this was one of mine!

........................... beautiful families, celebrating their dedication and love for each other and documenting it in a photography, such as the Sigurdson's.
So when a child asks me a question about my camera, watch out, because I will go off - and suddenly your photo session includes a photography lesson. These kids were all over it, and I think left understanding shutter speed and aperature better than most adults. Watch for these two to make headlines when they invent a travelling time machine! Little Frank will be in charge of the logistics and his sister Georgina will make sure it is beautifully package and full of style!
Thanks Sigurdson's, I hope you had a fantastic road trip and am looking forward to you seeing all your photos.
Great capture of a wonderful family! Jim even looks relaxed :)
(09.02.10 @ 05:36 PM)Every bit of the planning had a person touch, which Stef and David's family and friends all worked hard to create.
It was a beautiful wedding, for a couple who already have a strong history and are blessed to have future surrounded by people who love and adore them.
Stefanie and David, thank you for your humour, your gorgeous personalities. David you are incredibly handsome and Stefanie, you have no idea what an incredible beauty you are (Kate Winslet is lucky to look like you.)

Karen,
The photos are wonderful! We are both so happy with how they came out. You and your team were such a dream to work with and we can't wait to see the rest!
Cheers,
Stefanie and David
P.S. Hope the ankle is feeling better.
(08.27.10 @ 09:56 AM)Despite looking totally goofy as I photographed and held my reflector in the blowing wind and managed to drop a lens cap in the ocean, they were incredibly nice to me.
Thanks amazing, funny, beautiful Lucas Family. I hope you love your images.

Thank you so much Karen, We had a blast. You made our family photos so much fun to have taken. Your the best.
(08.03.10 @ 12:13 PM)Thanks Karen,

(08.03.10 @ 07:47 PM)Together they are twice as funny, witty and gorgeous. Thank you Bailey and Reed for the wonderful evening, that felt like hanging out with friends.

Wow! Beautiful photos Karen. You are one talented lady!
(07.19.10 @ 06:02 PM)Karen they look awesome... you definitely picked the perfect time of day. Thanks so much for coming and spending a couple of hours with us - I think we enjoyed it more than you did!
(07.19.10 @ 09:36 PM)This week, I have been photographing all types of talented people. For years, I have been in awe of Helen and her paintings, and eventually will have a piece hanging on my wall, I have promised myself. Check out her gallery and prepare to fall in love. But stay away from "Aspen Woods," because it would look so lovely on my green living room wall.
Not only is Helen a talent, she is also a stunner, and Jack seems to have inherited her charismatic smile and beauty.
Thank you Helen and Jack and I hope the session was a great start to your birthday weekend away. xoxox

Thanks so much Karen!
we love the pics, and had fun.
spent an awesome birthday on the beach with some of my favorite people!
helen
I had so much fun on this session, sometimes I love how ridiculous my job is. I think I spent most of my time meowing like a cat.

Rhonda sent me this note after the session, and it made my day:
♥Best family photo session EVER!!!♥ McKinnon Photography is amazing! Seriously, we didn't stop laughing the whole time. So much fun and I am way too excited to see the pic's.:
So, of course, a little flattery goes a long way, and I had to blog the images asap. Thanks Parker family!
I want to send a sincere, well deserving plug Rhonda Parker's way as well. Rhonda is a personal trainer, yoga teacher and boot camp leader extraordinare. You know the Bella Session series I recently posted? Through most the session the gals kept saying "Body by Rhonda" As well, Christine just started her yoga classes, and is in heaven. So, check her out at Well Balanced Body . Keep an eye out for her fall schedule and for some exciting business news soon.
Beautiful pictures! What a sweet family Rhonda. Can't wait for our next pictures with Karen, the absolute best :)
(07.17.10 @ 10:46 AM)Rhonda, Rob, Hayden, Thea. Good job on all the good looks. I think you made it easy for Karen.
(07.21.10 @ 10:55 PM)Chris is one of those people I know for here and there - that's how it often is around town. When I first met her I liked her style - modern, a bit retro and full of life. Now that I know her better, I have also fallen for her humour, honesty and uniqueness.
We started off our session with a java at one of my favourite coffee shops, The Wandering Moose , and then puttering around town, shooting, chatting, shooting, chatting..
Chris, you are beautiful and bring such a fresh aesthetic to your work!
You can check out Chris on her blog here - and if you scroll down to the yellow sweater post, you will know what to get me for my birthday.

We met on the first day of Grade 5. I moved to a new school, I dressed carefully, my plum corduroy capris (okay, I think they were actually knickers,) and my mauve polo sweater, which I proudly received as a gift from grandmother.
It was the wrong outfit. My preppy try-hard did not jive with the dark denim, try-hard tough look for the school. I still, perfectly remember how scared and mortified I felt. How badly I wanted a friend.
It could have gone really poorly. Thankfully though some people looked passed the major first day at a new school outfit mishap and decided that I could be an acceptable friend. Thank you, Togan
Since then, through the same high school, different groups of friends, different high schools, different countries actually, and very different lives, she is still my "best friend from Grade 5."
We get together, not often enough, and we can pick up right where we left off. I am as comfortable in her house as I was after years of going to her childhood home to make tortillas with butter every day after school (mom, that is what I ate almost every day after school for two years.)
Last week, I hoped a plane to Ashland and spent three child free days with Togan. It was so relaxing and fulfilling that it felt like a week.
Ashland is an idyllic city where every delicious, affordable restaurant seems to have exposed brick walls and retro chandeliers. It is where I have now had the best coffee ever, it is where my friend Togan bought cupcakes and ate the bottom so my wheat free self could savour the sweetest butter-cream icing that has ever crossed my lips. It was my first trip to Ashland and I would go again next week if I could.
I can't end this post without telling you it took me an unexpected19 flippin' hours get to Ashland, by plane people - not driving.
Luck with travel itineraries is something I don't have. Luck with friends though, I certainly do.
Here is the first post of some Togan photos, she looks to-me the same as she did when we met, without though, the rugby pants we misguidedly wore almost everyday.
Togan, you sound like such a fabulous person, and Karen just adores you. I will have to ask Karen if I can see some pictures of this grade 5 outfit, I'm sure mine would trump hers, hands-down! Thanks for inviting her for this much-needed girls' weekend, she can't stop talking about it. (in a good way, of course)
(07.14.10 @ 10:20 AM)I'm the lucky one to have such an amazing and talented "old" friend! For the record, I always liked those plum knickers though, in retrospect, I agree that the rugby pants were a mistake. xo
(07.14.10 @ 09:35 PM)Amy and Brad are beautiful people. They are funny, they are sincere and they are madly in love. As seems to be the theme with my clients this month, they are embarking on a new stage in their life as yes, they are getting married, but ..... afterwards they are selling their house and travelling for a few years. They are true free spirits.
In August, I will get another peek into their love for each other when I photograph their Tofino Wedding - I can't wait. Amy and Brad, you simply put, are adorable.
wow amy you look so happy love ya auntie
beautiful pics
Very Beautiful pictures cousin you look so happy and in love

Karen, I love these pictures! We can't wait to see the rest of them. Thank you so much for putting us both at ease & making it so darn fun! Looking forward to you sharing in our day next month!
(07.12.10 @ 05:30 PM)I love knowin the reason behind the intense laughter hahaha congrats!!!!!!
(07.12.10 @ 07:30 PM)Leslie, who I am sooo glad I met. She fascinates me.

And Kari, Jean- Francois and crew, are picking up and moving to Dubai. They are just doing it - choosing their own adventure. They totally and completely wow and motivate me to make sure I am living fully. This town will miss you!
We headed out to one of their favorite spots to create photos they will have as a reminder of this gorgeous place we live in (and yes JF, the ones down by the lake look fabulous as well.)
Karen,
Thanks for a very fun photo shoot. You were endlessly patient with my dogs who were shifting about, turning their heads the wrong way and sneaking in a face lick here and there. It is evident that you have a passion for what you do, an enormous talent to make beautiful photos and a deep, sensitive heart to bring out the best in people.
Leslie
Thanks, Leslie, that means so much, coming from you
(07.04.10 @ 09:40 AM)Just look at these little hands... so sweet...
Oliver, you are a lucky little man. You have the most charming, fun big brother and parents that are smart, intuitive, loving and relaxed. Not to mention that you are rockin' a really cute newborn hairdo and oh, how adorable are your little lips?
I
LOVE THEM :) What a cutie!!
(06.29.10 @ 06:01 PM)Hello my sweet boy! Huge thanks to Karen for a wonderful shoot! You're amazing!
(06.29.10 @ 07:37 PM)Thanks Tammy, having you read my mind certainly helps.
(07.01.10 @ 08:12 AM)I just received this note in my in-box this morning.
Hi Karen, Crystal & Christine,
Zeke and I had a wonderful wedding, it was better then we expected!
We want to thank you for being so wonderful during our day and helping capture every moment of the wedding. From the moment we contacted you about shooting our wedding to all the planning and engagement session, it was truly a wonderful experience. Believe it or not, Zeke and I can be quite reserved and shy, but because you made us feel so comfortable, we were able to be ourselves around you.
We cannot wait to see the pictures!
Love,
Ange and Zeke
PS The guestbook was a huge hit! It brought tears of laughter and heart felt comments. Those memories will forever linger with us.
And this is what I have to say back.
Dear Angela and Zeke,
I love my work, I love creating pictures but most of all I love the people I get to work with. Connections are what inspire me. Connecting with people like you. From the moment we first talked on the phone, when you were armed with questions about photography, I knew I liked you, and was excited by your interest in hiring the right photographer for who you are. Then when we met and managed to complete an engagement session before the snow came down, and then chatted over coffee for longer than expected, I knew your wedding would be fabulous.
Then the wedding day itself. Could it have been any better? The rain stayed away and the setting at Alders Beach set the tone for the warm, relaxed day you envisioned. Your day was a long one, with three outfit changes and two ceremonies, but you two glided through it so gracefully. Meanwhile, laughing and enjoying loving each other. I am so excited for you to become Comox Valley residents so that I can cross paths and and share a laugh with you more often!
Here is a little slide show of your day. To see it larger and with music click HERE
Well, I certainly don't have a way with words as Karen does, but I am certainly touched that you would include me in your thank you. I also found you two to be incredibly down-to-earth, kind, and especially caring to each other! I wish you many many years of happiness, and was absolutely thrilled to be a part of creating your engagement album. I'm sure it drew a few tears, you two are a lovely couple! Big hugs, Christine:)
(06.28.10 @ 12:30 PM)Bevin had a family photograph schedule awhile back, but had to re-schedule. For a darn fine reason though. Her family was about to grow.
This was the way the session was suppose to be.
Bevin, although I know you aren't feeling like it right now, you are glowing. We are all so excited to welcome your little one into our community and to celebrate with you Reza, and Aryo.
Thank you to our generous friend Melanie, for allowing us to play on her property.
Karen, these are amazing. You are amazing. Thank you for such a great experience. We love you. Can't wait to see the rest.
A big thank you to the Perkins crew for their generosity and friendship.
(06.27.10 @ 03:22 PM)Beautiful!!! I wished that I could have zoomed in to get a closer look, my nose was right up to the screen :) What a gorgeous growing family! And Karenyou are fabulous. Can't wait for our session.
(06.27.10 @ 09:50 PM)Thanks Rhonda, we will have great fun I am sure!
(06.28.10 @ 10:12 AM)BEAUTIFUL family!!!! I love the feelings captured. Can't wait to meet the little Mrs. Chances of her being UBER cute?..... 10 out of 10.
(06.28.10 @ 10:23 PM)Phebe - any one who knows Phebe knows unique would be one of the top words to describe her. She is a true original, she is intriguing and full of layers. She simply is just a beautiful person, who knows who she is.
Marieke is brave, she is a city girl who has found her way in the small town. I don't think she does anything half way, from exercising, to her work to being an amazing mama. She is brave and inspiring.

Leon just said "When are they having a Bella for Men?"
GREAT pics.
Tell Leon it's called a dude-oudoir session and we would be happy to set him up with his own special experience ;)
(06.22.10 @ 09:14 PM)lovely ladies. lovely photos.
(06.22.10 @ 10:41 PM)wow, gorgeous women
(06.23.10 @ 08:45 AM)Gorgeous, ladies! I knew these photos would reflect the incredible qualities you all possess. This was an absolutely amazing night, thank you all again!
(06.23.10 @ 09:12 AM)Phebe!!! You look gorgeous!!!!! Not that you don't look gorgeous everyday but that is stunning!!!!!
(06.23.10 @ 02:47 PM)The Patrick Family is part of this crew.
About seven and half years ago I was shooting a bride getting ready and in the corner sat a stunning and very large bridesmaid, eating a subway sandwich, like it was the first time she had ever had white bread goodness. We looked at each other and smiled, then compared our very pregnant bellies. Right then, I knew I adored her.
We next saw each other in the elevator around the maternity ward, then again when they brought their lovely son Braydon in for photos. She later joined me on a Chicks who Click class.
It was around this time that I started my crusade for her to become my neighbour. Of course, there are logistical problems, like their jobs in Campbell River, and loving their house. So, I have moved on to another way to snag them permanently.
Arranged marriage. I figure with all the gals in this house Brayden is sure to steal one of their hearts. It won't be hard. He has already overcome numerous obstacles that will give him a rare strength, at seven years old Braiden is working on getting close to walking without aid, and this is just the tip of what he has had to overcome.
However, the magic is, that none of it seems to phase him. He told me the kids at school call him the King. He is confident, he is charismatic, whip smart and adorable.
Now Jenna has told me that Braiden already has plans to use E-Harmony to find a wife, but I am pretty sure we can work around that, there is lots of time.
Kevin, Jenna, Brayden - you are awesome.
and kind of fierce....

OMG Karen these rock! As usual!!! And you brought tears to my eyes with the lovely things you had to say about my baby. I treasure your talent that you so generously share and our friendship. Can't wait to see the rest!
(06.18.10 @ 02:00 PM)Here are more images from the epic Bella Party.
Mel, our leader, without her we wouldn't ever see each other so I had to blog two photos of her.
Thanks Mel, for making us happen.
Mel's eyes are full of stories and sincerity, it is like she has lived way longer than her years - she is timeless. I am confident Mel could live anywhere, in any era and she would make it her home, she would fit right in, find her tribe andshe would live her life fully and make a difference. Mel, this photo has so much in it that I adore about you.

Marcie, whose laugh could take away your bad day in moments and then she would follow it up by saying something wise, (Marcie, why don't I have you on speed-dial?)
Sarah, at home fishing in gumboots or diva'ing it up. That is when she isn't cooking, growing food, teaching, crafting, reading or sewing.
Amazing photos! Wow!
(06.15.10 @ 09:31 PM)Wow! Wow! Wow!!! Love them all!!! Can't wait to see the rest!!!!
(06.15.10 @ 10:48 PM)Wow! Wow! Wow! Beautiful! Can't wait to see the rest!!!
(06.15.10 @ 10:49 PM)Absolutely gorgeous. Karen you captured the beauty inside and outside such amazing women. We really are lucky to have them as friends.
(06.16.10 @ 12:54 PM)marcie you're SO gorgeous!
(06.17.10 @ 04:44 PM)Karen, I always love looking at your blog. Great work with these beauties!!
(06.18.10 @ 08:08 PM)Bella Sessions are our own spin on what is typically known as boudoir. Our sessions can go in any direction depending on what you want - they can be pretty, flirty, outside, inside, sexy, sophisticated.
Bella Parties are when you get a group of girlfriends together and you head to the studio where you each receive professional makeup, courtesy of our favourite gal Crystal from Roots the Salon. You are treated to catering, you relax and have a glass of wine and then the fun begins. Each person has their time in front of the camera.
Yes, the obvious objective is for everyone to have stunning photos of themselves - because really everyone woman should! However, the Bella Party is about much more than that. It is about the experience, of being with your gals, and having a fabulous unique and memorable night, that leaves you celebrating your fabulousness. It's something really special for yourself.
Honestly, these parties have even more wow factor than we could have expected when we launched them.
Generally we recommend that the parties include 6 to 8 people. However, on the YANA auction evening, (after a few glasses of wine,) we agreed to 13. And I am so glad. A memorable evening it was.
I got a little emotional at the beginning of the Bella Party. In my studio stood 13 funny, beautiful woman, and I was getting the chance to photograph them and document how pretty and sexy they all are.
Near the end I was having trouble shooting as I was laughing so hard.
Thank you
Here are three of the 13 Bellapalooza gals.
Jenn, who I get goosebumps when I photograph because she has survived so much, yet just seems to get funnier and softer.
Arran, who I patiently waited years to get to know, and the wait was sooo worth it
Andi, a true beauty, whose eyes are always smiling

If you are interested in information on Bella Parties or Sessions, please contact Christine or I at the office.
STUNNING, STUNNING, STUNNING!!! Is it wrong to wish that you blogged all 13!! WOW!!
(06.14.10 @ 09:38 PM)Gorgeous!!! Love the use of light and space. You really showcase the unique beauty of each woman!
(06.14.10 @ 09:42 PM)stunning women inside and out. xo
(06.15.10 @ 05:12 PM)Beautiful!
(06.15.10 @ 09:29 PM)Andi you look truly fabulous! Beautiful pictures :)
(06.15.10 @ 10:10 PM)thanks Erin, Aaron's and Erin's really have it going on!
(06.28.10 @ 12:38 PM)I see Linden and I see spunk, glowing blue eyes, a smile that will make you laugh, and a girl so loved and adored. No one is going to hold this one back in life.
I have had the joy of photographing Linden three times, not including her mom's maternity session and each time I walk away remembering that I have the best job in the world.

Thank you so much Karen! they are exactly what we wanted! as usual you have outdone yourself-you are such a talented women. We LOVE them!
You have captured our Linden, our granddaughter, exactly!
(06.14.10 @ 10:09 PM)We spent our morning enjoying the simple beauty of a little trail and playing with Anika.
This shot is my FAVE. Look at the way David is looking at Jolean, I think he has a crush on her.

and of course, the main event, look at those eyes!

Soooo cute! Can't wait to see the rest! I see what you mean about lighting - unbelievable!
(06.16.10 @ 11:09 AM)Can't wait to have one of these pictures for my own.
(06.21.10 @ 11:46 PM)Thanks Jolean and Grandma!
(06.22.10 @ 01:23 PM)These photos were from just a week ago but it seems like a month.
I had quite the weekend, 13 amazing women came into the studio friday night for a Bella Party, Saturday Christine and I rolled our tired selves to the Bellies, Birth and Baby Fair - despite a serious lack of sleep we picked right up when we got there and truly enjoyed ourselves. We met tons of new people and were thrilled with all our clients who came by to say hello (especially the ones that shared news of a new pregnancy, twins and a big shout out to Karina who actually was in pre-labour.) We were very impressed with the whole event, the Comox Valley Doulas, who put it all together could definitely start a side endeavour organizing trade shows - well done and thank you.
So, last week, when the sun shone hard I was out enjoying every bit of it and joining me was Sophie, Olivia and Frank.
If you know this family, you know what I mean when I say they make me happy. The smiles you see in the photo are real, this is a crew that oozes goodness and a love of life. It was a joy to photograph them - and I am loving getting to know them.

Karen - these pictures look fabulous! We had lots of fun hanging out at the beach with you - definitely warmer than our first attempt! The girls kept talking about how much fun the shoot was - your fun and relaxed nature brought out the best in us! Can't wait to see the rest of the pictures!
(PS - thanks for help with the birthday surprise... full service photography, taxi, and more!!)
(05.31.10 @ 12:53 PM)Beautiful...wonderful photos, Karen Juli
(05.31.10 @ 05:33 PM)These photos bring a tear to my eye. Not only are they a lovely family but Frank and my son, Lee, have been friends since their school days. Seeing these photos reminds one that they really are grown men now!
(08.20.10 @ 08:31 AM)These photos bring a tear to my eye. Not only are they a lovely family but Frank and my son, Lee, have been friends since their school days. Seeing these photos reminds one that they really are grown men now!
(08.20.10 @ 08:36 AM)Thanks Carol for your comment
(08.20.10 @ 04:12 PM)Tara and Warren said their "i do's" in Jamaica late last year, and followed it up with a May reception in Campbell River.
The rain had been coming down for days, that is, until the evening before Tara & Warren's wedding. We met at a beautiful spot, that celebrated so much of what the island has to offer, we photographed and listened to their stories of their Jamaican celebration then we headed into town where we were met with some beautiful light.
There were many stories shared about how when Tara first met Warren, she couldn't stand him - it seems things have changed! Throughout there photo session they couldn't stop chatting and laughing with each other. I don't know what Warren was whispering but Tara always seemed to be blushing slightly - she was radiant!
It was a beautiful relaxed day and thank you Tara and Warren for having me as part of it. Have a fantastic time on your honeymoon. With two weddings and a honeymoon, you sure have the right idea how to live life to it's fullest and I am sure this will carry you very far as you embark on your journey together.
Please note that these photos may take a moment to load
Awesome shots Karen! You definitely have a gift and we are fortunate enough to have found you! Looking forward to seeing the rest of them!!!
(05.27.10 @ 03:02 PM)When I was first starting, the amount of weddings you had booked was thrown around like a badge, the idea being the more you photographed the more successful you were.
This idea never sat right with me.
I realized early on that only I could define my success and mostly it wouldn't be labelled by a number. Instead it is defined by my relationships with my clients and what I am able to give them.
Am I able to be present with them in their moment? Am I 100% with them on their day? These are questions I have continued to ask myself as my business grew and as I listen to my answers I tweaked things to make sure I can always answer YES.
So, how many weddings am I photographing this year? Just the right amount.
The right amount so that I can connect with each couple, enjoy their day through my camera, and support them in other ways as they embark on a memorable and somewhat intense day.
I am much more than a photographer on many of my weddings. Leading up to the day I am a sounding board on time-lines, a resource for all things wedding, a friend to throw ideas around with. On the day my assistants and I have been known to fix hairpieces, call in a last minute car-seat, provide snacks, play taxi driver and bring along the cake. We have fixed dresses, calmed brides, reassured moms and even dressed a wound.
What does this have to do with photography?
Everything.
My assistants and I do these things because we are right along side our bride and groom. We are with them 100% and this allows me to be not just A photographer but THEIR photographer.
This year the couples I am working with are incredible - they are a witty, funny, and warm bunch and I feel honored to do my best for them.
I wish more couples would take the time to have some photos created of just the two of them, whether they have children or not, together they are the foundation of their family. Together they will change and grow. What a wonderful way to celebrate all they have accomplished as two people living thier life together.
Nate and Jaimie are a gorgeous, stylish, relaxed couple and made my work pretty darn easy...

Karen, you did such an amazing job! Thank you for putting us at ease and making the session that much more enjoyable! We love these shots.
(05.24.10 @ 01:20 PM)Wow!! Beautiful pictures! Brought a tear to my eyes!
(05.24.10 @ 01:37 PM)I am a mom to one, a step mom to four and the daughter of the most inspiring woman I have ever met. I am a sister to an amazing mom who inspires my parenting. How do I sum up those feelings in an early morning blog post?
My daughter treats me like every day is mother's day, honestly, we are pretty sure she is Hallmark staff material. She loves her mama big-time, and is equally passionate about sharing her feelings, in words, writing and art. So mother's day for her is just a reason to amp up the expression of her love. My work desk has more love notes on it than it does work. I am not complaining.
It's a beautiful thing.
My kid and I celebrated yesterday, we started with a visit with my mom, then she took me to the Courtenay Museum, Fish and Chips at Porches and then a bike ride. I could repeat the day each weekend, minus the fish and chips which were coma inducing.
She asks me, does everyone love their mama as much as I do? I know I do. I am starting to tear up just thinking about what my mom has taught me - so I am going to shut er' down.
I am off to photograph Mother's Day mini-sessions and getting emotional at each one might slow down the photographic process today.Today in my shooting I am going to concentrate on capturing the moment, the moment when the mom's and daughter's eyes sparkle as they think about each other.
It is going to be a beautiful day.
Here is something for Jan and Jonathan, who welcomed the sweet and beautiful Raven Elizabeth (I have a name crush on her,) at the end of April.
You might know Jan as she is the owner of Dark Side Chocolates in Cumberland, I felt like I was with a celebrity when I was photographing her. If you have had her Salter Carmel Chocolates you will know why. They truly are the absolute, without a doubt best chocolates I have ever had - and I fancy myself a bit of a chocolate snob.
The look on Jan's face as we took the bottom photo was absolutely priceless.

Happy Mother's Day, Karen! xo
(05.09.10 @ 08:26 AM)Raven is such a beautiful name and Jan and Jonathan are going to 'rock the parent globe'. I just made that quote up myself. Congrats you guys and great shots Karen.
(05.09.10 @ 09:28 PM)'rock the parent globe' love that - let me know if any compensation is needed for me to use that..
but you are right, they definitely are going to rock it
I have been very busy shooting and planning, shooting and planning. The kids have been fighting off sickness and John is busy working through his last month of school.
And now it is Dance Week.
And despite the craziness that these few weeks are bringing us, we LOVE it. Really, I am not being sarcastic.
Four of our children take part in Pantuso Dance, and this is recital week. Groove 2010.
It is about my kids experiencing being in something bigger than just them, appreciating the talent of their peers and feeling proud of their personal hard work.
For me, it is about so much more than seeing my family, it is about community. In a small town like this, chances are most of the parents know a bushel of the kids performing and in many cases have watched them grow up. There are tons of children who have been clients participating in the show, and I get such a kick out of seeing all of them bring their own groove and personality to the show.
Pantuso teaches children and adults, so there are levels of experience and comfort with dance and performing. This year, the adult musical theatre class really wowed me - way to go! I am sure some of you are really stepping out of your comfort zone, but you wouldn't know it from your performance and stage presence.
There truly is so much talent happening, on the organizational end of things and within the performers. .
I took a ton of photos which I have yet to go through, but here are few:

There might be a few tickets left for tonight and tomorow's show - totally worth it. If you are thinking of a dance school for your little people, or yourself, I can't say enough good things about the leadership and community of Pantuso Dance.
Great shots Karen - Can't wait to see the rest...You've captured some very cool moments!!
(05.05.10 @ 04:57 PM)Great photos! I really like the top one.

(05.06.10 @ 12:05 PM)Arlene came in for a BELLA SESSION, which was a gift from a family member. I am so excited about these type of sessions, moms are often the least photographed person in the family, and it drives me crazy that women don't have photos of themselves. I have been photographing all types of women and all types of BELLA SESSIONS - and I am buzzed about it!
Arlene shone throughout her whole session, she is absolutely stunning, and stylish to boot! Half way through the session her hubby joined us for some photos - but I wanted to make this post all about her.
She has such a stunning relaxed way about herself, she laughs and smiles easily, and it is contagious.
Thanks Arlene, for being the icing on a fabulous day - you are gorgeous!

Beautiful Photos - what a nice thing for her to have
(04.26.10 @ 02:02 PM)This is a special one. Quinn's folks Mark and Dawn first came into my life when I photographed their wedding four years ago. Shortly afterwards their first child Reese entered into the world, earlier than planned and with complications that nobody expected, it was a hard time, full of worry and exhaustion.
So when Quinn came into this world, healthy, strong and with much more ease, it was such a gift.
Mark and Dawn, hadn't had that beautiful experience of bringing a newborn home, and easing a new addition into their life, but now they have and they are filled with such gratitude for their two healthy daughters. The look in Dawn's face as I photographed Quinn and her big sister Reese brought me to tears.
Mark, Dawn, just thinking about you and your girls gives me goosebumps. Thank you for the privilege of letting me create images for you.
With love, Karen
(check out my buddy Reese's sceptical look on the photo on the left, love it!)

I taught Reese dance last year - what a beautiful girl she is! What a great big sister picture!
(04.14.10 @ 10:24 PM)She is such a doll! I have a hard time not playing with her her the whole time!
(04.15.10 @ 06:49 PM)Absolutely picture perfect. I cannot wait to see the full set of pictures.
(04.16.10 @ 09:58 AM)The pictures are beautiful. The look on Reese's face is priceless. It looks like Quinn is crying in that photo and Reese looks just a little upset about it. Such a big sister! Love from Grandma D
(04.16.10 @ 07:03 PM)

Their wedding is going to be RAD on so many levels of RADNESS.
(was that too much?)
I, too, am looking forward to more radness, Karen. Ian and Justine, you two are adorable, I am so excited to meet you! Hope you enjoyed your session, it looks like it was so much fun!
(04.13.10 @ 04:31 PM)Thanks Christine! I will do all I can to bring on the radness lol! Only 4 and half months to go!
(04.13.10 @ 05:56 PM)Aaron, you are in very good hands, you totally scored in the parental department. I can't wait to see you grow and watch that cuteness shine!
Yup, another new fave - he is definitely the light in this family's life

(03.31.10 @ 06:43 AM)This first one is a new fave for sure
Thanks Tanya, it is definitely a new fave for me.
(03.23.10 @ 07:13 AM)I highly encourage my wedding clients to have one done, so much so that they are complimentary in all our Wedding Collections. Why?
They are a great time for my clients and I to become better acquainted, I learn so much about how they met, what makes them laugh and how they interact. They learn what a shoot feels like, and realize that I manage to create images even when I am being my klutzy self.
It is a connection sessions.
It is also really nice to have photographs of you and your sweetie not in your wedding ware. This is something that will grow in value. John and I had photos done and we love looking at them, they are really meaningful.
My session with Zeke and Angela was just right - on all accounts. I was pretty sure they were a couple who was recently in love, but boy was I wrong. These two have been together for years and they still get the giggles (yes Zeke, you giggle as well,) like a couple newly in love. They have a wonderful rhythm together, and seem to really respect who the other person truly is.
After our session together, I feel like I can call these two friends and am so excited for their wedding.
(disclaimer: we are having some quality issues with uploading to the blog - which we are working on sorting out - but I couldn't let Angela and Zeke wait any longer)
Karen, the photo's are awesome! We had so much fun that day and you captured some true moments. Zeke said he does not "giggle," he "man chuckles." We are so happy the weather worked out so well, and we got it done before it "snowed." You are so wonderful to work with and we cannot wait for the wedding. Hopefully we can see the rest of the engagement pictures soon! - Your friends, Zeke and Angela
(03.17.10 @ 07:34 PM)love the one on the bottom right, they look like such a fun couple
(03.19.10 @ 10:51 PM)
Gorgeous.
(01.30.10 @ 10:00 AM)Love the picture of my new grandbaby, Jordyn. She is pretty sweet if I do say so myself.
(01.30.10 @ 10:32 AM)She is an angel. Oh so sweet.
(01.30.10 @ 11:57 AM)Beautiful picture of my beautiful grand daughter
(01.31.10 @ 10:06 AM)a beautiful wee addition to the world - welcome!
(01.31.10 @ 02:11 PM)This picture beautifully captures the serenity of the quiet times with Jordyn. She is such a wonderful baby. I love you Jordyn! XOXOXOX Auntie Angie
(01.31.10 @ 03:00 PM)Jordyn you are gorgeous! We can't wait to meet you! Grandpa is so proud and I'm thinking I'm loving being a Gramma! Love you always :))
(02.05.10 @ 05:27 PM)Jordyn you are gorgeous! We can't wait to meet you! Grandpa is so proud and I'm thinking I'm loving being a Gramma! Love you always :))

(02.08.10 @ 03:26 PM)Beautiful photo. She sure is precious!
(02.18.10 @ 11:28 AM)Beautiful photo. She sure is precious!
(02.18.10 @ 11:29 AM)Saturday brought a little farmer's market time followed by beautiful Bella Sessions - stunning women!
Sunday was a go-go-go day, as Christine and I were at the Comox Valley Wedding Show. The show was fantastic, we met so many warm enthusiastic people, and it is interesting talking to brides about what gets them pumped about photography.
Thanks to everyone who stopped by, we appreciate you saying hello and taking time to find out what we are all about. Hopefully you are as excited about photography as we are.
A big kudos to those of you that came by even though we had talked before and you knew I was already booked for your day - it feels really good that you still took the time to stop by our booth and say hello - made me smile. You are awesome.
I wrapped up the day with a good old Atlas dinner with the amazing company of a few other professional photographers. Good times.
I brought my camera to the wedding show, but totally failed to use it. Lame move on my part.
But because a post is better with a photo I bring you the blue eyed beauty Nova.
And I had to share this one - so funny!

Podlings on Cliffe Ave is looking for a part-time employee (2-3 days a week, vacation relief and to cover sick days. The person should have retail experience, be reliable and have experience using cloth diapers.
They are accepting resumes at their store at until 104, 2270 Cliff Ave.
This is one of my favourite local stores, and owners Kristina and Sherry are very passionate about what they do, I have no doubt that it would be a great working environment.
The best matches always seem to happen by word of mouth, so help spread the word.
And because posts are always better with photos, here is lovely Selah hoping in front of the camera while I was testing a lighting set up.

Well, it's always fun to google your own name to see what comes up. And so, when I typed in 'yours truly' your photograhpy page arrived. Just wanted to say the photos show some fine work. I live in Saskatchewan with my husband, who is from North Vancouver, originally. He has recently purchased a 36' boat and so we will spend time out on the ocean this summer. Thought I would say hello, and say that it was nice to find your great photos.
Cheers,
from Karen McKinnon
- the prairie version
Lily and Simon cruised into my studio with their huge smiles, warm personalities and equaly captivating parents.
Maybe it was the smiley sticker I had on my tummy the whole time, (which I didn't notice till after the shoot, because that is just how cool I am,) that made this session extra fun. Or maybe it is just the way Lily and Simon's family roll.
But, just try telling me that they are not a huge ray of sunshine (which I just found out is, appropriately, Lily's nickname).
happily updating because everyone wanted to see a family shot -

(01.21.10 @ 08:04 AM)The good news: Our computer tech Matt from Covaltek Computers wears a super-hero cape and our system is in good hands. Thank you Dr. Matt.
The other good news: blog posts are coming.
The yet another piece of good news: The photo course page is updated, info about a Chicks who Click course and another
Last week was five days of heavenly potraits and inspiring clients. Such as the very lovely and gorgeous Debbie, who it turns out I met when I first moved here, almost ten years ago (eek!), so it was a bit like reconnecting wiht an old friend.
can you please tell me more about the photo course, Chicks who Click
(02.28.10 @ 12:32 PM)Sure can Wendy - can you please email us your phone number, email us at info@mckinnonphotography.com
(03.07.10 @ 07:07 AM)We run a triple back-up system so my paranoia has no foundation, is a false fear, is totally ridiculous (so I keep saying over and over,) and the rewards of the computer running smoother are sweet.
Send good computer thoughts my and just remember to check that you are running a good backup procedure on your computer.

Her parents Jason and Kelly are big mountain bikers, and so apparently is Brooke

beautiful! I ahve been lurking hopeing for a peek - Thanks!
(01.06.10 @ 03:44 PM)What a doll. Love the bike basket.
(01.06.10 @ 05:02 PM)She's beautiful Kelly & Roly! Hope you are all settling in and basking in this little miracle!
(01.10.10 @ 08:05 PM)Karen: these pics are gorgeous!! thank-you so much for an enjoyable session. It was a fun outing on our 6th day! Hello Michelle and Greg: we certainly are enjoying our miracle, thank-you!
(01.12.10 @ 02:16 PM)I know she was so meant to be, because we got her at the shoe store - for real! This happened.
I use to have no time for small dogs, then I realized, all cuteness aside, it was the most practical choice for our family - really, I wasn't swayed by the fact that they are absolutely adorable.
Dressing a dog? Ummm, yah, no way. Obnoxious. Unless it was practical, like the super cool lime green little coat Utah scored for a holiday gift. Every dog needs a coat with a hood - right?
But put me, Jennifer, Christine and Rhonda in the studio with Utah and this is what can happen.
I blame the three of them entirely.

I promise this isn't a new creative direction for me and I'm not crossing my fingers behind my back.
Oh my gosh, I love the last one, she looks like royalty
(01.05.10 @ 04:35 PM)Apparently I have a new career making hats for dogs! ;)
(01.05.10 @ 04:59 PM)It only needs to happens once Karen!!! Utah, hopefully, got some good doggie treats for putting up with all that frill :)
(02.03.10 @ 02:02 PM)Thanks for keeping me in check wendy!
(02.04.10 @ 09:38 PM)The last two days while delivering clients photographs and going about some errands I was showered with lovely treats, flower and cards. It was incredibly lovely, and I feel so very blessed. However, what really made me smile was bringing these things home to my family.
See, I get the chance to know you all, and I get so much from my interactions with my clients. But John and the kids, they don't have the same experience. They know I love my work, and that people are a massive part of that, they know how important being genuine and doing my best is and they wholeheartedly support me in it.
so these little gifts ya'll gave me, they were for them - because me, I get you.
Thank you.
Last night my bookclub did our annual cookbook exchange, and the conversation turned to cooking blogs and I promised I would share some favorites:
Dinner With Julie - she wrote two fabulous cookbooks, Grazing and Smart Cookie. We have Smart Cookie and it is fantastic, it was my go-to book to give for the last year.
Steamy Kitchen - I have been getting her RSS feed for sometime and in the last week I have heard numerous people mention her cookbook. My friend Lisa, who is a top-notch cook, loves it. It is definitely on my wish list.
EatMakeRead - Love the name, love her style, a maple syrup cocktail that's the ticket!
Elana's Pantry - Gluten Free and Sugar Free, around here two of us should be wheat free and sugar free (we mostly succeed), so I have convinced myself that she is our long lost cousin, who will soon be moving to the Comox Valley
Picky Palate - not sugar free, not gluten free. Check out the black bottom mini caramel pumpkin cheesecake bites and caramel apple cream cheese bars, and oh yah, there is lots of healthy stuff as well.
A Year of Slow Cooking - I have blogged about this site and her cookbook evangelically. Read it, buy the cookbook, run into me in the street and we can geek out about how much we love our slow cookers.
I am sure there are tons of others out there, but these are my current fave's. Hope you like them.
Karen, thank you so much for your sweet words! I love that you are a slow cooker geek-----and I love that phrase! Your book club sounds like so much fun.
oxxo steph
Thanks for the cookbook tips Karen! I haven't heard of any of these ones. Maybe I sould be saying "thanks a bunch"....I do already have too many cookbooks. Oh well, really, can you have too many?
xoxo Happy Holidays!
Kathy
I have a huge cookbook addiction, and am always surprised I find myself going to the internet for recipes
(12.26.09 @ 07:52 PM)I love thinking about the new art people will have on their walls for the holiday season.
We have been working on painting our house, so the photos have been down and the new ones I printed for our family are SO ready to not be stored in the office and to be proudly hung in our living areas.
In anticipation of some art re-arranging Selah, the seven year old, and I made some digital art. The other night I told her we could do anything she wanted and her request was to edit and photoshop images. Yes, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I figured if she was that interested it was time to empower her to make her own computer art and really start teaching her some photoshop skills.
We decided to make three pieces of art that were about our home. This is what we came up with it.
The number one word:

In our home we value

and each day we remember to

I love these works of art, they are going to look fantastic in our entry way. Even better though, is the crazy fun and loving time we had making them. I am one lucky mama.
I am going to do a top photos of the year (because my pal over at Lotus Paperie pressured me into it,) post and have a few more sessions to share and news about a new type of session, and our family session to share, so check back.
Gorgeous art work! I am a very proud Mom and Nana.
(12.22.09 @ 12:39 PM)You gals are something else!!! Love it/them!!
(12.22.09 @ 04:50 PM)I love these, I can't wait to see them on the wall!
(12.24.09 @ 10:40 PM)Ryder started off the session a little fussy, but only because he was needing a power nap, which was worth the wait - because......
there is nothing much more beautiful than this ....

with mom's hand

(12.22.09 @ 07:07 AM)I just want to pinch his little cheeks.
(01.23.10 @ 12:40 PM)Now, as John is Mr. Christmas I have both celebrations in my home. But it is Hanukkah that stirs my heart, it makes me feel connected to family even if I am not with them, reminds me of the many blessings of my childhood and brings my focus to the power of hope.
The Jewish celebration of Hanukkah, also known as the festival of lights, is a holiday of hope. For eight nights we light the Menorah, each night adding a candle. The ritual is a reminder of a time when Jews were told to worship false gods and despite all odds were victorious when they stood up to their oppressors and fought for their beliefs and freedom. At the end of the rebellion a small bit of oil was found in the desecrated synagogue , just enough to oil to light the Menorah for one night but the oil lasted eight nights.
I just arrived home from Whistler where I celebrated with family. This morning I sat down to look through my emails and peruse through our local newspaper. I was honestly feeling a bit stressed with all I have to do and everything happening around town but then I was hit with a different feeling.
Hope
It is hard not to be struck mby all the support and encouragement for all the non-profit efforts that happen in this town. This town shines very brightly.
From me and my family, thank you for your support of the Cans for Comments - we are looking forward to our Can shopping trip.
and in the spirit of giving -
Planet Kids is offering 25% off any gifts purchased for the Santa's Workshop and is a drop-spot for any donations. High five for Planet Kids. Donations for Santa's Workshop wrap up on the 17th.
Until
I got to the studio and the door wouldn't open.
Seriously.
Lame.
Thank you cell phone for existing so I could call them and tell them (gulp) I was locked out of my studio. Thank you mobile lock guy who came and fixed it. Thank you Kelly and Jason for being awesome about re-scheduling and THANK YOU sunshine that came out on our rescheduled shoot, making me look like it was all meant to be.
We started inside with some intimate maternity portraits, and some with a little less skin -

and then we did a last minute run outside, I can't decide between these two but the fact that there is a rainbow above Kelly seems very right to me.

Thanks to Kelly and Jason for being so fun and so gorgeous! I can't wait to meet your little bambino.
and THANK YOU blog readers for pressing the +COMMENT button below as each comment = a can to the food bank.

(12.22.09 @ 06:06 PM)Each comment left =a can for the foodbank.
What a treat this session was. Oh to be turning 13! Tianna came to the studio after school last Friday for her session, a session all about her. She has siblings and we squeezed in a few shots of them, but this was all about Tianna at this glorious and pivotal time in her life. So cool!
Even better was her friends all met her at the studio and joined us for some group shots before they want off to celebrate her birthday some more.
Huge high-five to Tianna's parents (one of whom is Remax Realtor Karen Usipuik who I have been hearing great things about for years,) for giving her something that will preserve the memory of her birthday forever.
She has the most stunning eyes, she is absolutely beautiful.

<
Awesome picture, BEAUTIFUL girl, inside & out!
(12.04.09 @ 12:56 PM)Great photo... Wish we could have made it back from Victoria in time!
(12.04.09 @ 04:46 PM)Thats my girl! Karen, thanks for doing such an amazing job and making Tianna's birthday special. I'm so happy to have finally met you:)
(12.04.09 @ 09:21 PM)Jess and Josh brought their style, warmth, love for each other and their four legged buddies into the studio last week and together we created what might be one of my favorite sessions this year.
They were set up with their session through a fundraiser we are doing with the St. Josephs Hospital Foundation. I have been donating photography for this organization for some time and
Christine and I wanted to step-up how we could contribute. I feel like it is a non-profit association that many people in our demographic aren't aware of. So between now and Christmas hospital employees can purchase a gift certificate for themselves or a friend and 100% (yes 100%) of the cost goes towards the foundation.
Most people are picking these up for sessions for next year, but we managed to squeeze Jess and Josh in before our holiday cut-off and I am so glad we did -because these photos make me happy!
Jess, Josh, I had a HUGE CRISIS picking what to blog - but a very basic game of eeny meeny miney moe, helped me out.
REMEMBER ANY COMMENTS LEFT = CANS FOR THE FOODBANK.
It's giving time around here people!

I seriously WANT those dogs...even though I don't really want a dog!!
(12.04.09 @ 01:21 PM)Gosh, I love that red wall! These photos are fabulous, and I love the black and white one of the four-legged members of the family. Karen, I also love your 'cans for comments' promotion. I will try not to overdo it!
(12.04.09 @ 01:47 PM)LOVE love love the black and white. We can't believe it worked out so perfectly with both of them looking forward at the same time!
(12.05.09 @ 12:23 PM)jess, josh - you know you two are as "cute" as the pups dont' you?
(12.06.09 @ 08:41 AM)Love love love the red wall and who doesn't love dogs? (well... many don't) but I do :) Beautiful :)
(12.07.09 @ 08:56 AM)Those are some awsome pictures wish you live in Anaheim California we need
a good photographer in this town.
I love them all, but super heart the last one!
(12.08.09 @ 07:49 PM)Throughout the wedding it was clear why people are drawn to them, you walk away from them feeling like you had a genuine encounter and like they were giving you a piece of themselves. Watching their friends and family flock to them and throw their arms around them with huge hugs was heartwarming and energizing.
During their wedding day the rain came down hard. Now I am not afraid of a little moisture, but this was "run to your car with your coat over your head hard". But did this damper the feeling of warmth between them? Not one bit, if anything I think it helped their love radiate.
They hosted a wedding that was 100% Sarah and Tom and that also provided a unique and entertaining time for their guests. It was an honor to be part of it.
They are a stunning couple with the most gorgeous eyes.

And yes, they were married by Elvis

Thank you Sarah and Tom, you are both stellar and it was a gift to be part of such a memorable wedding!

Kids sessions, where I just get to play and photograph are my favorite these days. I love being given the time to capture all the child's expressions and gestures.

(11.16.09 @ 06:38 PM)ADORABLE! These pictures should be on Hallmark cards!
(11.17.09 @ 12:52 PM)1. I think slow-cookers are sexy. So, when I heard about the "Make it Fast, Cook it Slow" cookbook, I headed to chapters online asap and punched in the credit card and waited by the door for the package like a small child. The cookbook is the creation of blogger Stephanie O'Dea who cooked with a slow cooker for 365 days and put all her successes in a book.
I had tried some of her recipes before and was optimistic about the book and it does not disappoint. The recipes are simple, gluten-free and inspired. This isn't your regular slow-cooker book.
My apologies to the friendly people who were trying to talk to me while our kids had swimming lessons together, I wasn't being rude, I just LOVE a new cookbook and couldn't keep my nose out of it.
Oh - Christine just came in the door and told me she just got a slow cooker from her hubby - told you they were sexy.
2. I don't know how I missed this, why didn't anyone tell me? A little movie house in Cumberland, oh, how I love that.
3. Mark John's, no idea how I found his work, but I have had it bookmarked for at least a year now and look at it regularly. Cheeky humour + art = hart (ok, I couldn't resist, sorry)
4. All the stuff happening around town. This Sunday check out The One Big Earth family heritage experience at the Filberg Park Who knew a small town could rock out November like we do.
Off to shoot, and then shoot and then shoot. I am working on keeping tue and fri as office days and shooting tue, wed and sat - we'll see how that goes. I was going to add a photo with today's post, but then I would be late and that would be pretty lame.
Fantastic pics Karen... can't wait to see the rest. Great pics of the boys.
(11.04.09 @ 04:49 PM)You are the second person to rave about this cookbook this week - I'm all over it....and gluten free!!!
(11.04.09 @ 05:31 PM)I'm loving your love list. I LOVE my slowcooker and can't wait to get my hands on that book. Our new movie house is super cute - maybe we should have a date since I have yet to get there?!
(11.05.09 @ 12:02 PM)Love the little movie house in Cumberland! Just down the road from us, can't wait to check it out soon!
(11.05.09 @ 03:32 PM)My precious grand-nephew. What pictures!! Simply beautiful!
(11.03.09 @ 05:40 PM)Oh my .... cute doesn't even begin to describe this ....wow!
(11.03.09 @ 06:40 PM)These are awesome. Such a cute little man.
(11.03.09 @ 08:21 PM)LOVE IT!!!! Coady, you make one extremely cute little elephant!
Love ya! Auntie Shell
These are so so great!
(01.22.10 @ 01:54 PM)This second photo of Ayla just makes me say awww.... look how sweet her hands are holding each other.
Thanks you three, it was a super sweet experience. You are awesome!

(11.01.09 @ 02:24 PM)it's amazing how Alex could make such a cute kid, jokes! lookin good guys!
(11.01.09 @ 02:27 PM)I am in awe over these pictures! I agree that the fog in the background is an incredible setting for the bright colored Autumm leaves. Eleni watching her hubbie make faces with Ayla is so adorable. The colors are so vivid and I couldn't help notice that faint color of fall on the tree way in the foggy background...it enhances the pic as well. The picture of Ayla by herself is so endearing. It captures her curious nature to a tee...Wonderful photography! I can't wait to see the rest of the pictures!!!
(11.01.09 @ 03:12 PM)What a stunning family you have Eleni! This picture perfectly captures the love within all of you, just beautiful.
(11.01.09 @ 03:29 PM)If you aren't going to make it to the opening pop in sometime and check out the new digs and the super larger than me photos by me - I will try to grab some photos tonight.
Here is the invitation
Loved your larger than life photos, they look gorgeous...it was such a fun time, too bad we missed you, we left at just after 8.
(10.29.09 @ 01:09 PM)Thanks Tenielle - it was such a great event, we didn't get there until about 8:45, sorry we missed you. It was fun to see the photos, kind of strange
(10.29.09 @ 06:58 PM)It was so lovely to have them in front of the camera, as I photographed their mom and dad's wedding and I have been able to watch their family grow.
Meet Finah. Two weeks of life.
Finah's folks Misha and Paul hold a very special place in my heart. All my encounters with them have come at pivotal points of my life and each time, I am have been moved by them and been able to take away something special.
On top of being a smart, down-to-earth, drop dead gorgeous couple, they are funny and real.
And they produced Finah - what a lucky girl.
Oh, one more thing - you know that photo of the couple running in the waves on their wedding day that hangs on my studio wall that is Misha and Paul.
Just like her parents, Little Miss Finah is gorgeous!!! I must let the world know though that some of that beauty comes from the fact that she is part Kiwi, given this is where she was made - New Zealand/Aotearoa - Land of the Long White Cloud. And the photographer must have known too because she looks like a long pink cloud in that top photo!!!! xxxxxx
(10.25.09 @ 02:43 PM)These photos are wonderful! Finah is absolutely gorgeous, which is not surprising considering the A+ gene pool that she was created from! Congratulations Paul & Misha, on a beautiful baby girl who will always carry the 'Made in NZ' tag! :)
(10.25.09 @ 04:27 PM)What amazing photos! I can't wait to see the rest! Your photographer is right, you are 2 very special people and Finah is a very lucky little lady.
(10.25.09 @ 06:39 PM)Wow! Beautiful photos of a beautiful little girl! The first photo is so dreamy and peaceful and the second photo really highlights her gorgeous hair and eyes. Well done, you two (Paul and Mish) and lovely photos (Karen). Where can I see more of baby Finah?
(10.26.09 @ 08:59 AM)Finah's debut; absolutely angelic, sweet, adorable, cuddley. She is this perfect little package captured beautifully on "film".
(10.26.09 @ 09:28 AM)Wow! I especially love the wee elphin Finah "unwrapped"!! :)
(10.26.09 @ 09:54 AM)She is soooo beautiful, What wonderful pictures, something to treasure.
Anty Moe
(10.26.09 @ 11:32 AM)Great pictures!! Finah is such a cutie and every time I've seen her she looks just as these pictures show her, calm and relaxed. I think it must be no work at all to raise this beautiful little girl, eh Paul and Misha, Ha!!
(10.26.09 @ 11:50 AM)Welcome to the world, darling Finah. You are already surrounded by love. These beautiful photos touch one's soul. No wonder Paul & Misha wanted you to photogragh her.
(10.26.09 @ 04:00 PM)The photographer captured the essence of an angel, the lovely Finah. She has captured all our hearts.
(10.26.09 @ 05:36 PM)What an little angel, and as gorgeous as Mom and Dad! Love the photos!!
(10.26.09 @ 05:36 PM)What a precious blessing!! Thank you Misha and Paul. Love Noni
(10.27.09 @ 05:15 PM)What a beautiful and angelic baby girl! The pictures are just awesome - you will treasure these forever. Can't wait to meet her and see you together as a family!
(10.27.09 @ 10:19 PM)Aww how precious! Great pictures of Finah
(10.29.09 @ 05:20 PM)What wonderful photos. A beauutiful baby which is not surprising. Everything Paul and Misha do is first class.
(10.30.09 @ 07:51 PM)1. Pantuso Dance. This isn't new, I have written about why I think this is the bees knees of dance schools - but I am not being redundant, I have more to say (big shocker). Pantuso Dance is a hugging mecca. The kids hug each other hello, parents hug kids other than their own, and grown ups welcome each other with hugs. If you have a big personal space bubble and are heading there wear some really bulky itchy fabric to keep people away. Otherwise, go soak it up.
2. Future Shop. I can't believe I am admitting this. I am typing in a whisper.I can go on about some of the "not so friendly, don't share on the blog experiences I have had there," but I won't. I have gone there twice in the last week and both times they rocked the service and had me out the door in less then ten minutes still feeling rather normal.
3. Christine a.k.a office manager, assistant, friend, giver of cool water bottles, filler of said water bottle, major crush of my dog Utah, laugher (I know it isn't really a word but it should be,) at my jokes. If you haven't met her yet be prepared to meet the definition of cool chick.
4. Kids who clean up dog sickness without being asked. It is 6 a.m. I am actually wearing two pairs of pj's, not because I was trying to be extra sexy, but because I was so cold. I am double cozy in bed. I wake to the sounds of "ohhhhhhhhhh, grossssssss" "yuck", "UTAH!"
So rather than jump out of bed and help, I hide under the blanket - yes, I am that kind of parent sometimes.
I then listen as the girls clean it up themselves. I LOVE that.
5. A reason to color on the walls
This is from Land of Nod
We love you too Karen from the bottom of our hearts!!!! I love the royal we as I was never allowed to use in in University!!!
(10.21.09 @ 07:50 AM)Oh, you are too much. I love you too! By the way, Lindsay, Pantuso isn't the only hugging mecca...our office is as well! :)
(10.21.09 @ 04:01 PM)Last week, as I went though the gates to a gorgeous home to photograph three very special families, the Janzen's, Beausoleil's and Mangles'. I was very cozy and content in my bubble.
These three families bit for my services at the YANA auction, and we put together a marathon portrait session. These families have been best friends for years, their children are best friends, they are like family to each other - and it was a beautiful thing to be around them on thanksgiving day. It made me want to call all my pals and tell them how much I love them.
My assistant Jen and I felt very thankful for these clients. Not only did they donate generously to YANA, a charity very close to my heart, but they were happy, themselves, laid back and somehow managed to keep the impending rain away.
I know a few of them from around town (okay, well if truth be told, from my love of shopping at Cherry Wine, and Uranus) and a few I have had the sincere pleasure of photographing before - meeting the rest of their crew was great fun.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful family get together! It was amazing to see such a wonderful large gathering - it really showed what Thanksgiving is all about!
(10.18.09 @ 10:39 AM)Thank you so much Karen and Jen. You guys were amazing and the photos are too! That was a lot of people to organize and you did it with such spend and creativity. We all had SO much fun, it was a great way to spend the day and we can't wait to do it again. I just have one thing to say about the picture of Tyler and Nicole, "Aaaawwwwwwww".
(10.19.09 @ 09:12 AM)Awesome pictures Karen. You and Jen did a wonderful job of organizing all of us and creating lots of wonderful keepsakes. Many thanks.
(10.22.09 @ 08:33 AM)Blogging this session actually pained me. Why?

Scott and Kim were one of my first wedding clients in the Comox Valley and their family holds a very special place in my heart.
And really, between these two how do you choose what to blog?
We have the opportunity to work with Impact often and always welcome the experience. You should check out their portfolio on-line.
I do love these shots. Isn't Autumn a wonderful time for pictures? The bottom one is so great!
(10.15.09 @ 10:58 AM)These are great. I knew Scott from his job....glad to see he's still kicking and has such a perfect family. Your the best photographer Karen....you better still be in this when Morgan is older!
(10.16.09 @ 02:35 PM)I love the colours!!!
(10.18.09 @ 10:41 AM)Awesome Pictures Kim!!!!! Hannah is so charming :)
(10.23.09 @ 06:26 PM)My darling niece Elishka turned 9 this week, which is hard for me to believe, because the first moment I held her is perfectly etched into my mind, as is the nights I spent babysitting her, running the washroom water because I thought it calmed her tears.
Today, Rowan turned 11. She is the same person she was yesterday, yet that jump from 10 to 11, kind of makes me look at her different.
Either way, she is just as stunning, unique and brilliant!
Happy Birthday wonderful Rowan.
(Just to clarify, the kids only get a birthDAY, birthdayWEEK is only for grownups. Especially because we have two, yes TWO, more birthdays to celebrate this week.)
Wow Rowan you sure have grown up, what a beautiful picture I bet grandma Sandi is so proud.
Happy Birthday Rowan!
Have fun birthday celebrations this week Karen!!!
(10.13.09 @ 10:49 AM)Happy Birthday Rowan! Could you look any more grown up in that picture? Beautiful!!!
(10.13.09 @ 04:42 PM)Often when I am out with a family I try to get a breakdown of just mom and dad, and I love the emotion in this shot.
Thanks Stowe's. You are an amazing, intriguing, beautiful and memorable family and being with you in that beautiful place was a pure delight.
Here are two of my favorites of the family.
WOW what amazing photographs they look like they should be in a magazine. What a wonderful and special day. Thank you Steph and Jessea for sharing such precious moments with me. Love you both Always. Debb xoxoxox
(10.06.09 @ 10:53 AM)Karen, I can't tell you how proud I feel to see our family together. We are a family of 5, hooray!! We will be plastering our home walls with all our family photos. Much appreciation for hanging in there with us and the littles to get these pictures. Warmly, Janet
(10.06.09 @ 01:46 PM)Janet - you give me goosebumps!
(10.07.09 @ 02:34 PM)Karen,
Great shot of our boy! Rio and I had such a fun time at the shoot - thank you again.
Sharene
The wedding, held at Mt Washington Resort, had the drama of a good rain storm, but of course, this didn't damper Tia and Shaun's mood one bit. They rolled through some photos before their ceremony, and after their I do's while we shot a few family photos the sun came out for a quick hello. It was a wonderful day, which culminated in an incredibly fun and warm reception - I can't imagine Shaun and Tia in any other environment.
Congratulations Tia and Shaun, I am so glad we got to partake in your day - you are both stunning!

We are so fortunate to have this lovely family as neighbors!
(09.03.10 @ 11:14 PM)Great shot Karen :)
