About Me

Hello and welcome to my photo blog. I am Karen McKinnon, a Vancouver Island based photographer - a gal fortunate to be living my passion. The blog is where you can see recent sessions, keep in touch with what is new around here (and I promise you it is never dull) and get a better sense of who I am, what I love and how I show it.

Thanks for visiting. Please leave a comment and let me know you were here - it really does make me smile!

Let me start by telling you that I am a city girl, I even had serious plans to move to New York after college.

Now, let me tell you about my day.

Last night, for the first time in my career I injured myself, to the point where I wasn't sure how it would impact my work. I gave myself a third degree ankle sprain and a fracture. Late in the evening I took myself to the hospital.

My experience was a positive one, and it had me thinking about how community can cushion the blow.

I walked into the hospital and saw familiar faces. I was a bit of a wreck, exhausted, stressed and in pain. I was amazed at the care and attention that was given and left feeling re-assured and  better (if they ever offer you the pain killer shot say yes.) They totally understood, not to belittle anybody else's life, that my life is totally not-conducive to injuries that have you sitting on the couch.

This morning, rather than buy the $200 air cast I facebooked a call out for a loaner or a used one. Within the hour, the lovely Janine, who I have only met a few times, popped up offering hers. It was missing a tool needed to set it up, so after picking it up, I zipped back to emergency and they happily loaned me one.

I can't help but think that in the city, I would be driving an hour to borrow one, have to park far away at emergency and work hard to get them to loan me a little tool.  And what would have been the chance that someone I have met only a few times would go out of their way to loan me something?

So, this small town girl is very, very happy now. It's all good and I am even going to be able to make it to my 6 p.m. shoot.

And because posts are better with pictures, here is one of Utah looking rather strange, that's what happens when she tries to be fierce.

This is exactly why I love the Comox Valley! Things like that just don't happen in the city. Hope you are feeling better soon!
